We all hate that feeling when you see someone open a gift and it’s the same as the gift you’re about give them. That heart sinking feeling, awkwardness and panic over whether you can remember where on earth the receipt is. You think you have come up with the most useful baby shower gift then you realise it’s just another of the same.
Baby showers can be tricky. By the time the shower arrives, Mum is probably pretty far into her pregnancy so already stocked up on her must haves. Clothes/ wraps and towels are the obvious choice but does she really need more? Plus, it’s not very different or exciting.
I have put together a list of 17 useful baby shower gift ideas that will stand out from the rest and Mum will love you for.

Australian Women’s Weekly Birthday Cookbook
We all have fond memories of birthday cakes made from this book. Which one did you have? Dolly Varden? Mary Jane? or maybe the signature Choo Choo train? I had the Maypole (my birthday is in May) and have already made some out of it for my 2 boys.
Bath Water Thermometer
This was probably my personal favourite of all my own Baby Shower gifts as it is something I didn’t even know existed and used every day for probably the first 2 years.
A Basket of stuff
If you just can’t decide on one thing then why not grab a few different items, throw them all in a Laundry basket, (it’s not every day you get the chance to gift one of these 😉 ) then wrap nicely.
A 1st year photo frame
I wish I had done this for my first two boys but will look to get one for my upcoming bundle of joy. If you haven’t come across these they are 1 large photo frame consisting of 12 individual frames – one for each month of baby’s first year. Such an amazing way to save the memories.
A maternity/ newborn photography session
This can be a bit expensive so maybe club together with a couple of other people but a Maternity or Newborn photo shoot would be an amazing present. Just make sure when buying there are no extra cost such as for the actual prints etc.
Sophie The Giraffe
This seems to have become a necessity for every baby. Everybody loves Sophie!
A spa package/ Pregnancy Pamper package/ A post natal massage in her own home
Depending how Mums pregnancy has gone she might be desperate for a bit of pampering before the baby arrives. However, If you think she will prefer something for after then maybe offer to babysit for a couple of hours while she gets a post natal massage.
Clothes Hangers
Everyone thinks of clothes but no one thinks of what these clothes are going to hang on. Admittedly not very exciting but definitely very useful.
Digital Ear Thermometer or Snot Sucker
The first fever can be scary enough for a new Mum without her realising she never thought to get a thermometer. She will definitely be grateful you thought ahead for her here. Equally so, when baby get’s his first cold and the snot won’t stop running!
Jolly Jumper
Not something that can be used for a while but we all love to see baby’s delight at their first go in a jolly jumper!
6+ months clothes
Maybe you have left the gift buying too late and need something quick and easy or just can’t resist some cute outfits. With my first I didn’t need to buy any clothes until he turned about 6 months and then I had absolutely nothing. Buy something for when baby is that bit older, just remember to make sure you are buying for the right season.
A cleaner for a month
Give Mum more of a chance to enjoy those first weeks with baby and not have to worry about the housework. Book a cleaner to come in once a week for a month and she will love you for it!
Dinner Ladies
Similar to the cleaner – take the stress away and get some delicious hot meals delivered for the first few weeks.
A Wipes Warmer
This one depends on the season that baby is born. Both of my boys were born in Winter and I used to feel so guilty wiping their warm little bottoms with an icy cold wet wipe.
Gro Egg
I found knowing what to dress baby in every night really stressful. The gro egg lets you know the temperature of the room so you can more accurately work out how many layers to put baby in. It also acts as a nice night light.
A Love Letters To My Baby Journal
Such a unique and beautiful way to create something special for when baby is older. This thoughtful gift could really bring a tear to Mums eye!
First Aid Kit
Every house should have one but this becomes even more important when you have little people depending on you. Put together everything Mums needs and she will be prepared for nearly every scratch fall. Some ideas of things to include might be:
Nasal Spray
Panadol/Nurofen
Infacol
Gripe water
Vicks
Glycerine suppositories
Saline
Ice gel packs
Paw Paw
Wipes
Thermometer
Hydralyte
Q-tips
Bandaids
Sudocream
Sunscreen
Sorbolene
Cradle Cap Lotion
Coconut Oil
Infants Friend
Baby Eye drops

These are great ideas, and we got a lot of these for our baby shower! 🙂 The big basket of things was very helpful. I like to buy bigger 6 month or 1 year clothes so they have something to use later – like you said it’s nice to give them a little something as they will have alot of cute newborn/ 000 things!

I’m due in October, and still figuring out what we need. I’m not having a traditional baby shower (unless someone traps me into it) and we are trying to keep the amount of”stuff” minimal… But I would still take baby clothes personally because I haven’t bought much. First aid kit was definitely on our registry too.

It’s so hard to know exactly what you need until baby arrives! Clothes are still definitely great though 🙂

I loved the ultimate sheet saver set. Keeps you from changing the sheets if your baby spits up or has a leaky diaper. I also like giving some cool gel soothing nipple pads for the moms that plan to nurse.

These are all great baby shower ideas. My favorite is the first year photo frame because that’s the most memorable year in a child’s life.
