What Books Do Kids Love Right Now?

How many books do your kids have? Mine have loads, most of which never get looked at. They each seem to have their one or two favourites and the rest just sit on the shelf. I think I was the same when I was little. Back in the ’80s and ’90s before all these electronics really took off, books were an easy Christmas or Birthday gift (Guinness book of records right?!). However, there are only a certain few that I can really remember reading.

For me, any Roald Dahl (but in particular, Georges Marvellous Medicine!) or when I was a bit older, Judy Blume – will be the top of my childhood books but what books do kids love these days? About a year ago I introduced Isaiah to Roald Dahl and we are slowly making our way through his books together. He has also become a fan of David Walliams. Flinn is still needing books with lots of brightly coloured pictures and Hudson, well he is still blown away by the magic of a lift the flap book!

With my 3 boys all having their birthdays in the second half of the year and finishing off with Christmas (not to mention the endless school friends birthday parties), I have spent the last few months thinking of children’s gift ideas. Father Christmas always like to include a book in my boy’s stockings so I have found myself wondering what Books Do Kids Love right now?

Gigantosaurus is Elians favourite. It’s like the boy who cried wolf but with dinosaurs! We read it multiple times a week, but I love it too tbh, could probably manage it without the book now! Chantele Cross-Jones

What Wesley Wore by Sam Langley-Swain is a fantastic picture book for young school-age children. We love how it boldly looks at bullying from both sides, with the theme of acceptance at its heart. Annette Demetriou 

The picture books “You Choose” and “Just Imagine”. It sparks so many conversations you can be there for ages, and it’s amazing to hear what my four-year-old comes out with – Helen Copson

 

My eldest loves The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg – Steph Davis-Johnston

My 7 year old daughter’s favourite book is The Book with No Pictures (by B. J. Novak). She finds it absolutely hilarious getting adults to read it! – Victoria Sully 

 

The Tiger Who Came to Tea was a big hit with both of my children! They also both love the Alfie and Annie Rose series by Shirley Hughes (as do I as it reminds me of my childhood!!) and we all love the Paddington stories! –  Ella Roxanne

   

My sons favourite has got to be Jack And The Jelly Beanstalk! A great twist on an old classic. –  Lisa Hoad 

The Little Raindrop by Joanna Gray. It’s such an adorable story about the lifecycle of a raindrop. – Kelly-Anne Combes 

At the moment, my son’s favourite books are the Oi series, with Oi Duck-billed Platypus topping the charts at night. So funny! – Catherine McKenna Jordan

 

Where to start!? Harry And The Bucket Full Of Dinosaurs is a favourite for us – my son is called, you guessed it, Harry! And he has his own bucket of dinosaurs too – Amy Downes 

Eldest loves “Charlie And The Chocolate Factory”, youngest loves “Just Like Jasper”. An old school choice but she loves it! – Bethanie Wardell

 

My 7-year-old loves his encyclopedias from the DK books range. He has the animal one, the shark one and currently carries the Super Bug one around! – Zoe Turner

 

At the moment Freddie is loving Dinosaur Munch. It’s about a diplodocus that never stops eating! He is Dinosaur crazy after our two visits to see Dippy the Diplodocus. Victoria Hockley 

 

Odd dog Out by Rob Biddulph! It’s awesome –Raimy Greenland 

My three-year-old son loves bedtime stories but his absolute favourite (according to him tonight anyway) is Usborne Phonics Readers ‘Fox On A Box’ because he said (his words) it has cake in it and he loves cake!! So there you go, what a great reason for loving a book! I love reading him ‘Tomorrow I’ll be Brave’ by Jessica Hische as he’s shy and I think it helps explain it’s ok to be shy and that he is brave. He also loves snuggling up to this story too. – Rowena Becker

The Pig In The Pond is my favourite, we get so excited about reading it!! The Gruffalo for my 3-year-old and George’s Marvellous Medicine for my 6-year-old. – Nicola Wills 

Zog is my 3-year-olds favourite story at the moment and every time you suggest something for her to do, she says ‘what a good idea’ like the story.
The Horrible Histories series is what my 8-year-old is loving at the moment. – Faith Stephenson

   

Calm Down Time by Elizabeth Verdick. I’m big on emotional management and agree with the statement that EQ is more important than IQ in the long run. This book is the reason why my 4-year-old can now articulate his feelings and will even try and help me calm down when I’m upset. I credit it too for minimising tantrums at home. – Jade MacRury

 

Julian Is A Mermaid is my current favourite! We love children’s fiction here! I love this particular book for its beautiful illustration & simple yet poignant plot. –Lucy Benton

Oi Frog! She absolutely loves it and thinks she can read it herself because she knows all the words! (she’s only 2!) It rhymes and is super fun, I really laughed at it the first time I read it! I read it 5 days per week at least and I still enjoy it! – Nicola Merralls

The BFG is my 6-year-olds favourite. He reads along while listening to the audiobook. – Emma Phillips 

The Faraway Tree for my little boy and Grandma’s house for my daughter – Charlotte Stein

I started reading I Am the Seed That Grew the Tree: A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year with my 2-year-old on 1st January and 9 months later we are both still loving it every night. – Liona Woricker

In conclusion, it seems Roald Dahl is still a family favourite along with more recent authors such as Julia Donaldson and Aaron Blabey joining him. The books, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt, Oi Cat, The Gruffalo and Dear Zoo are favourites in our house.
