A Mum’s Fight Against Domestic Violence and Finding The Courage To Start Again by Melissa Wiringi
In 2008, Melissa Wiringi was thrilled to discover that she was pregnant for a second time. It was an unexpected pregnancy—it turned out her IUD contraception had failed.
Her partner, however, wasn’t the least bit happy. He wasn’t ready for a second child. So in May of that year, he turned to meth to suppress the emotions he was experiencing.
He tried to keep his addiction hidden from Melissa, but as time progressed, it became quite obvious. It began with secrets and lies, her paranoia increased and eventually reached a point that she’d be spying on her partner, promising herself to leave as soon
as she could catch him in the act.
She watched their life become more dysfunctional and miserable. Fights started becoming more frequent, they got louder and got more irrational. He would do frightening things like kicking car doors in, and in one instance, he threw an axe which landed less than a metre in front of her.
“The mind games were in full play. He had worn down my confidence,” Melissa said. “I was often called, ‘lazy,’ ‘useless,’ a ‘bad mother.’ The one that hurt me the most was, “how are you going to cope with two kids, you can’t even look after one?’”

Melissa wanted to leave but was terrified of being on her own. And she was even more terrified of giving birth to her second child as a single parent. Toward the end of December, she hit her lowest point. She wanted to take her own life. But by the end of the year, she welcomed her daughter into the world. Her life was changed and she
gained back a bit of her fire.
She began to put her foot down and regularly demanded for her partner to leave the house.
“I discovered broken lightbulbs in various places, which started to tell me things were really wrong,” Melissa said. “Before this, he had the sense to get rid of most evidence, we had a toddler who was around. The final straw happened when I arrived home from a getaway and my son noticed a pipe stashed in between the couch cushions. It made me feel sick.”
So she finally built up the confidence and left, with her two children, the oldest barely
two years old and her youngest at about three or four months. Melissa spent the
remainder of the year rebuilding herself and raising her kids, putting in only the best
parts, and learning to be happy on her own as a single mother. She practiced
affirmations, meditation, and gratitude. She developed a bucket list of 101 things to do,
which included starting a business, writing a book and travelling the world with her
family. On her journey of personal development she found forgiveness and gratitude for
the events that led her to her new and improved life. She learned to stand on her own
two feet and be a great mum to her beautiful children.
Melissa opened herself up to find gratitude for all that she had experienced and felt compelled to write her story to help other women. In 2016, she completed her first book “Domestic Violence on Ice,” which talks about her inspiring journey, from her darkest
moments of depression and leaving the doomed relationship to her amazing transformation. “Domestic Violence on Ice” is now available for purchase on Amazon and 50% of profits will be donated to a New Zealand non profit, Prepair NZ, which works toward preventing domestic violence by educating young women about healthy relationships and self love.
In 2017, after giving birth to her third child, Elijah, she recognised she wanted to inspire women to create their dream lifestyles. She began building her passion business, online business coaching for adventurous women. She encourages women to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the internet and create the life of their dreams. “It’s not just about making money, it’s about creating a lifestyle you and your family enjoy, while also adding your mark on the world,” Melissa said. “I’ve found something I love, I am helping others and this has created an opportunity for us to have the freedom to enjoy life the way we like it.”
Melissa and her family are set to travel the world early in 2018. She is also working on her second book about creating the life of your dreams, which is scheduled to be published in 2018.
