I have always been curious about Hello Fresh. I have had a couple of friends try it and love it but I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing for me since I’m not a fan of cooking and a little guilty of just throwing a couple of meat pies or chicken nuggets in the oven out of laziness.

Therefore, when I was given the opportunity to try a Family box to review for you I couldn’t resist!

For those who aren’t familiar with what Hello Fresh is…

There are 3 sizes of boxes to choose from:

  • Classic – For 2 or 4 adults and contains meat, fish, fresh veg and grains
  • Veggie – Again for 2 or 4 adult but this time for Vegetarians
  • Family – For 2 adults and 2-3 kids and containing child friendly meals.

When placing your order you also get the chance to add a fruit or juice box to come with your meal box. With the classic and family box you are able to swap your meals to suit your family.

The box gets delivered to your door at your prearranged time and inside are all the ingredients plus recipe cards to make your chosen amount of meals. The only things you may need to add are the oil or butter for cooking and perhaps some other common pantry items. (I had to add a little soy sauce to one of my recipes.)

On opening my Hello Fresh box I found 4 brown paper bags. These contained the main bulk of my ingredients and then the meat and dairy was separate in a cooler bag. The 4 bags are colour coded to the recipe cards so you know which one to use for each meal.

Packaging has obviously been considered as it is all reusable, recyclable or biodegradable. Plus, only the food you need for each recipe is sent so there is little to no waste.

Each recipe card is packed full of information to make it suitable for even a beginner level cook. For recipes with ingredients that may not last as long there will be a note in the bottom corner letting you know to eat that one early plus the approximate time it will take you to prepare the meal and it’s total time to be ready.

Each card also contains a list of ingredients, the utensils you will need, the nutrition information and a image of the finished meal.

Who is Hello Fresh suited for?

To be honest, it is suitable for anyone but what did keep coming into my mind was how great it will be in those first few weeks (or months!) of having a baby. Being due with my third in December I’m getting very conscious of how time poor my life will be again. I also know that in the past you can feel a bit helpless when things get on top of you so something like this is ideal. It takes away the effort and time of having to think about, plan meals and shop for your ingredients but still let’s you have the control of putting together a meal and the satisfaction of creating something fresh and delicious from scratch.

The first step for all my recipes involved getting the herbs and vegetables chopped up. I love this as it means you don’t get half way through with something cooking away in the pan and you suddenly realise you need to peel and chop 3 carrots! Also, when my first two where babies I used to sometimes do the meal prep in the afternoon so that I knew I was prepared come dinner time if the baby became needy.

As a Mum it’s not just those initial newborn weeks that can get hectic and time poor. With kids we sometimes have those weeks on the calendar that are just jam packed -after school activities, working late or perhaps one of your little ones are sick and it’s taking up all your time to look after them. That’s where it can be a saviour to be able to prearrange Hello Fresh to take one less stress out of the week.

What was my experience with Hello Fresh like?

The meals you will receive in the family box won’t be fancy gourmet meals but instead humble, comfort meals that you most probably cook anyway. This also means that kids will like them too. My eldest is very fussy and he happily gave each meal a go (WIN!!!)

That said, they are not just plain and boring. The meals that were included in my box were:

  • Crumbed Chicken & Sweet Potato Mash with Parsley – Butter Sauce
  • Sweet & Soy Pork Noodles with Crunchy Vegetables
  • Cheesy Baked Mexican Pie with Tortilla Crust
  • Sweet Mustard Chicken & Baked Rice with Lemon and Nutty Greens

As for the ingredients that I received, I have to admit they were the freshest herbs and veg I have ever used (I usually get all mine from the local supermarket) The meat is all ethically sourced and everything seems top quality. When I got to the 4th meal I was worried I was going to open the brown paper bag to browning, wilted produce but it all looked just as fresh ingredients from meal 1.

My boys are young and don’t eat much so we did have a lot of left over food. This is great if you are happy to eat leftovers the next day (Again, ideal if you have a newborn at home) but also great if your kids are older and have bigger appetites. I reckon the family box meals could easily feed 4 adults with no one left hungry.

Any down sides to Hello Fresh?

There weren’t many downsides to the experience, but if I really had to be picky then I guess I would say… The butter was measured in cups rather than weight – really picky I know, it’s just one of my pet hates.

Overall, I loved the experience and while it is something I personally wouldn’t use 7 days a week, 365 days a year I am definitely tempted for when the new baby arrives, for those weeks that are just plain busy or I’m just feeling lazy.

I do have a few friends that use it regularly though and if that’s how it suits them then good for them!

Lastly, the all important question… How much does it cost?

Each box is slightly different. The Family box I tried works out at about $8.75 per meal which I think is very reasonable. The other two boxes are slightly more at $9.16 for the Veggie box and $9.50/ meal for the Classic box.

When you consider the quality of the food and the freshness I think this is definitely good value. Hello Fresh also offer a generous $35 off your first order, just head over to their site, choose your box and wait for your delivery!

I hope you enjoy the meals as much as I did!

I haven’t tried Hello Fresh. I did a Blue Apron maybe? How are their offerings in terms of people with allergies like me?

Susan, quoted from the Hello Fresh website: “Many of our customers who have allergies in the family find that our HelloFresh boxes work well for them. Since HelloFresh boxes only contain unprocessed ingredients, it is possible to omit, or replace, any ingredient that could cause an allergic reaction.” Hope that helps! x

I’ve seen several people review this on YouTube and have wondered if it’s worth the cost. Glad to hear you like it. I may have to give it a try.

Not sure about ordering food online like this but so many people rave about it. I would much rather just go to thr grocery store

Of course, its a personal choice. I enjoy going to the grocery store too, therefore I couldn’t do something like this all the time but it would definitely be handy on those really busy weeks! x

This sounds so good! I really want to try something like this, even if it’s just to have a couple of meals in the fridge for when I can’t be bothered making lunch!

What a great service! I haven’t heard about this particular service, but it’s nice to know something like this exists. When my daughter had her fourth child, she was born on Dec. 18th, so something like this would have really helpful. So like you said, new moms, busy families with extra guests around holidays, people who have had surgery, or who just moved into a new place … lots of ways this kind of meal service would come in handy!

This is the very first Hello Fresh review I’m reading and I have to admit it sounds pretty tempting. I hate having to spend so much time in supermarkets and a meal kit delivery could get me out of it.

Yes, I have just started it back up again. It makes dinner time seem so much more manageable. I even enjoy cooking the meals a bit more too! x
