5 Natural Ways to Prevent the Flu

June 27, 2016Rebecca Timmins

Flu symptoms don’t rear their head until about 1-4 days after you have been exposed to the virus. Instead of loading up of medication containing who knows what here are 5 ways to protect yourself from catching the dreaded germs in the first place.

how to avoid the flu

Keep warm.

Go and treat yourself to a nice new hat and scarf! ‘Shivering depresses the immune system and this makes us more likely to catch colds. Also, lower levels of sunlight and altered levels of hormones such as melatonin and serotonin negatively affect how the immune system performs.’

Get plenty of sleep. How to beat the flu

Skipping sleep can be as destructive to the immune system as stress. Research suggests that sleep patterns may play a role in a gene that helps fight off bacteria and viruses.

Good hygiene.

Make sure you exercise good hand washing. As many as 80% of germs are transmitted via contact like sneezing, coughing or touching surfaces that have been sneezed or coughed on says Philllip M Tierno, Ph D., clinical  professor off Microbiology and pathology at NYU Langone Medical Centre.

Exercise.How to Beat the Flu

Try and get in around an hours worth of exercise each day. It doesn’t have to be done at once, instead spread out throughout the day . It can be as simple as walking around the office, walking instead of driving short distance trips or just going up and down the stairs.

Increasing your heart rate and getting the blood pumping increases the activity of a type of white blood cells that attack viruses.

Drink plenty of Water.

Get guzzling. We should be aiming to drink 2-3 litres a day. Rehydration expert Dr Susan Shirreffs says: ‘Water helps the kidneys function properly and flushes out the toxins that accumulate in our bodies.’
Research has found that those who drank just three glasses of water a day were five times more likely to get a blocked nose or sore throat than those who drank eight.

Great tips. I’m afraid I’m very slack with the exercise bit but just about to go for a walk in the beautiful sunshine.
